Many years ago, when I was an emerging Manager, I become responsible for hiring myself a team.
I was so excited having the responsibility. This was going to be great. “My” hand-picked team. This was going to be easy. This was the key to my success.
I placed my first advert in the local press (pre internet) and waited for the response to flood in. Every person that applied, I got in touch with and invited them in for an interview. I wanted to give them all a chance as someone had once given that same chance to me.
I put aside a whole day to complete the first round. Amazingly, most turned up. I excitedly made the interview room look good, set the chairs out, with me behind my “important” desk.
Let the fun begin.
What a disappointment. None of them had my passion, ambition, energy, and enthusiasm.
So undeterred I repeated the process, and again disappointment! I asked myself “why can’t I find people like me”?
Of course, the answer was obvious. There is only one of me! Did I really need another one of me? I could be a real pain in the ass to manage. What I really needed were people to complement me. But I was too young, inexperienced, and naïve to see this back then.
Just like many ambitious SME business owners and emerging corporate managers that I regularly meet.
You are unique. You are unusually ambitious; you have taken a big risk to start your own business, or you have stepped up to become a leader. That is rare! You are You.
The key to growing your business/team is to ensure that you have the right people sitting in the right seats, they share your values and truly suit the role. Happy teammates who share the same values will create a super team and take most of the workload off of your shoulders. Afterall, running and business and leading a team should be enjoyable.
